Artists as Small Businesses

Once again a bit of a cop-out, but this NPR Article goes along with many of the postings over the past week. It highlights the performance artists who make their art and their living through the fringe circuit.

But in a larger sense it also deals with the concept of "selling out." So as you read this keep a few questions in mind. What defines selling out for you? Is selling out different for other people? What are you willing to sacrifice for your art? So you've decided to value artistic integrity by not selling out; who is seeing your art? Is it worth no one seeing any of your work at all?

The 2009 New York International Fringe Festival begins tomorrow night. If you are in the New York area, make sure you catch a show or two and support the artists who are working hard for their vision.
