Review: Happy Days @ the Corn Exchange

Playing at the Project Art Center was Samuel Beckett's Happy Days produced by The Corn Exchange. If you happen to be in or around Dublin right now, do not miss this production - it is exactly what the Beckett play should be. The simplicity and precision of Clara Simpson's performance and Annie Ryan's direction is nothing short of brilliant! Not a gesture is thrown away. Not a moment is rushed. Surrounded by a design that is beautiful in its starkness, the Corn Exchange has taken ownership of this story in a way that is both uplifting, funny, and terrifying all at the same time.

If you are not in Dublin, take a moment too to peruse their website. Their ideas about the execution of theater through Commedia del'Arte is something that any actor or director should spend some time reflecting on. Ms. Ryan's views on theater are quite strong.

An for that special Chicago connection it is interesting to note that Ms. Ryan is originally from Chicago having spent time working with and training at the Piven Workshop before moving to Dublin and forming her own company.
