Hungry Art

The best art is created on an empty stomach.

Sure it is easier if you don't have to worry about where your next meal is going to come from. Studying and perfecting your craft is always better if you don't have to worry about whether or not you are going to have a roof over your head. But where does the passion come in?

Theatre is about drama and conflict. Theatre is about hunger and passion. If there is no need to create great art, the only stories that will come about are those that will make us feel good about ourselves. Theatre is a living breathing medium and should have scripts that are equally as raw. It's no wonder that theatre is constantly censored as it has the power to incite revolution and change perceptions. But take that passion out of the theatre - make it too well monied and too safe - and the theatre become boring, dull, stale, flat and all other sorts of words that spell death to our medium.

Theatre must be allowed to sing for its supper, because if it doesn't, it will beg, borrow, and steal.
