Reflecting on yesterday's post about what art we choose to consume in the new year, I encourage a second resolution: buy local. Just as there is a movement in produce to buy from local farmers resulting in fresher food while supporting the local economy, we should make an effort to support the arts embedded in our community. Go see an off loop play rather than supporting the Broadway in Chicago tours or some of the larger houses that bring in New York talent to cast their shows. Go and see the local bands at Martyrs, Schubas, or your neighborhood coffee house rather than the mega hits that play the United Center. Encourage and support those around you to tell the stores of our city.
